SMOKE FACTORY

The film is 102 minutes (1 hour 42 minutes) long. It was shot on a professional digital video camera.

Its tempo is slow, imbued with the "spirit" of Tarkowsky and Bela Tarr. In Cuba, it has been called "a difficult film", and all have been much impressed by the cinematography (mostly long, brooding sequence shots).

The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

SYNOPSIS - ENGLISH

Sebastian, a laconic, withdrawn and unemployed man in his twenties, creates his own, fictitious workplace in an abandoned factory, a workshop that brings a measure of meaning to his drab existence. The workshop draws the attention of Pimentel, an old carpenter who also finds refuge in Sebastian's invention. A deeply ambiguous place, the workshop comes to have an unexpected significance for the two.

Director´s Bio

Born in Argentina in 1978, Adrian Replanski studied and received a film degree at the Vancouver Film School (British Columbia, Canada) in 1999. His 10-minute documentary on a Soviet submarine turned tourist attraction in a Canadian port-city earned him a post-production award and was shown at the Seattle Film Festival.
In 1999, he secured a film-related internship in Cuba through IDERA Films, a Canadian production and distribution company. There, he worked as a camera assistant in Juan CarlosTabio's "Lista de Espera" ("Waiting List") and directed a short, experimental film titled "The Plumber". "Smoke Factory" is his first feature, filmed in Cuba, where he currently resides.
